The Opportunity

Join a lean US engineering team as their senior .NET developer, working on the internal and external web applications that run a large insurance operation, along with the databases and scheduled jobs behind them. This is a client-facing consulting role with an established product and a real codebase, not a greenfield build. You will be the person the team lead hands the hard problems to. Fully remote, US business hours.

What You'll Bring

1. The ability to take a hard problem and find the answer yourself. This is the core of the role. You will be given the difficult work: calculations producing the wrong result, data that does not reconcile, a process that takes two minutes when it should take seconds. You are comfortable tracing a problem from the screen through the code into the database until you know exactly why it happens.
2. Deep backend skill in C#, MVC and Entity Framework. The backend matters more here than the front end, and you should be strongest there.
3. Real T-SQL ability, including writing, reading and debugging stored procedures. Much of the business logic lives in the database rather than in application code, so you need to be genuinely comfortable there rather than dependent on an ORM.
4. Working knowledge of query performance: reading an execution plan, understanding why something is slow, and knowing what to change.
5. Expertise in LINQ, and a commitment to clear, maintainable object-oriented design with proper separation of concerns.
6. Front-end capability on MVC views with Kendo UI and jQuery, plus JavaScript, CSS and Ajax. Most Kendo work follows established patterns, so pattern-matching skill matters more than deep component expertise.
7. The ability to work with minimal direction and oversight, and often with no written requirements at all, just a short conversation and a direction. You scope your own work, keep moving when nobody is available to answer questions, and raise blockers early rather than absorbing them.
8. Excellent written and verbal communication in English, including the ability to confirm your understanding of a request before you start.
9. Professionalism and self-driven initiative in direct client interaction, and full ownership of the work you submit. You can walk through anything you deliver and explain why you built it that way.

What Sets You Apart

1. Experience with SSIS.
2. Experience with automated unit tests.
3. Previous consulting experience, demonstrating your ability to deliver high-quality solutions in a client-facing environment.
4. A background in financial, actuarial or insurance calculations where getting the number exactly right was the point.
5. Experience being the only external contributor embedded on an in-house engineering team.

How We Work

We want to be straightforward about the environment, because it suits some senior developers very well and does not suit others. Requirements usually arrive as a short conversation rather than a written spec. Priorities shift as the business needs them to. Much of the codebase is legacy and undocumented, and the people who wrote it may no longer be here. There are stretches where the person who could answer your question is unavailable, and the expectation is that you keep delivering anyway.

Note that this team does not use React. The front end is MVC, Kendo and jQuery.
